Lesson One: Your newspaper
Part 8: The Advertising Sales Department: Retail, National and Majors

The Advertising Sales Department: Retail, National, and Majors Advertising Retail, National and Majors are departments that sell ads other than classified and could be made up of a number of other departments, or just one general one. The largest ad sales department is usually the retail ad department.

These salespeople deal with the retailers and basically any businesses out there that are trying to get people to buy from them. These salespeople usually work outside, only returning to the office for meetings and processing the ads they've sold.

Many times there are specialist departments as well, such as Major Accounts, with salespeople to handle the advertisers who are so big that they need special attention, as well as National Accounts, with salespeople to handle all the ads that come in nationally, such as airline ads.

Another specialist department would be Preprints or as it's sometimes called, direct marketing. These people handle the selling and printing of stand alone products that advertisers want to insert in the newspaper, such as grocery store flyers, and will often help other ad salespeople sell preprints to their own accounts. Sometimes there's also a retail telemarketing department where advertisers who should run in the non-classified part of the newspaper or Run of Press or ROP, as it's called, are sold over the phone.
