Lesson One: Your Newspaper
Part 7: The Advertising Sales Department: Classified Advertising

The Advertising Sales Department: Classified Advertising
The advertising department, where you work, and it's broken into a number of sub departments. First, there's the advertising sales department. This department at its most basic level is divided into the classified advertising department and general advertising department.

At most newspapers, the classified department handles a number of different types of ads. The line classifieds usually appear somewhere near the back of the newspaper and are usually in the form of narrow columns comprised of mostly text under various headings such as help wanted, cars for sale, homes for sale, etc. Some of these ads are sold by inbound telemarketers who wait for people to call them, such as an individual who wants to sell his car. Other line ads which are harder to sell are sold by outbound telemarketers, who will call businesses and ask them if they'd like to run, such as a realtor who has been running in a competing publication.

Also part of the classified department are the display classified salespeople. These people sell the larger display ads, that is the ads with boxes around them that could run multiple column widths in the classified section. These ads would include the larger automotive, real estate, and help wanted, or recruitment ads. There are also outbound telemarketers who sell display ads under special headings like "Professional Directory" or "Vacation Getaways". Together, the classified advertising department brings in huge revenues to the newspaper, and generally charge a slightly higher rate. This classified section is one of the best read parts of the newspaper as well.
